Consumer Bus Defends Home Turf
In the face of competition from buses intended for commercial control, the CEBus performs where it was meant to - in home automation. This hands-on project shows how CEBus works and what it can do.

Summary Conclusions:
Home automation is still an emerging market but not because of the networking technology. CEBus is a low-cost, proven protocol that designers can use to network any home appliance. Nevertheless, few automated houses exist. The fate of the industry lies in the hands of consumers. They have seen automation move from single-product control (the coffeepot goes on at 6 am) to multiple-product interaction (the garage door activates the lighting and music systems) and have yet to get excited. The next technology step is probably remote monitoring and control through the Internet. Perhaps consumers will find enough value in this next generation of products and services to start the long-awaited home-automation boom.
